The bridge collapsed on Sunday evening after a small side road was built on its surface. The side road was not connected with the main road.
The Indian authorities said, on Monday, that 32 people were killed and 79 others were injured in the incident.
“The situation is under control. The debris has been cleared. We have informed police,” Rajesh Ranjan, spokesperson for West Bengal police told Associated Press.
At a press conference in Kolkata, officials said the bridge would be closed for the night and a thorough investigation would be conducted.
“I cannot give anything yet. We have to wait for the forensic report,” said Ramdas Kavashetty, the Chairman of West Bengal government.
According to the official website of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the bridge has carried over 1.5 million vehicles every day.
The West Bengal State Industrial Development Corporation Limited has been given charge of building the new road which will also be made in partnership with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
