The top two players in the world, Caroline Garcia and Angelique Kerber of Germany, both reached the WTA Finals Tuesday, advancing to their second consecutive finals for the first time in their respective careers.

Garcia, the reigning French Open champion, became the first player since Jelena Ostapenko in 2013 to have reached the year-end WTA Finals. The only player to win multiple championships in a year, she is also the only player to qualify for singles and mixed doubles at a Grand Slam tournament on the year. Garcia was a finalist in doubles this year in the Australian Open and Wimbledon, but did not qualify for the singles or mixed doubles.

The 28-year-old German beat Australian qualifier Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (10), 6-3 on Centre Court in the finals for the first time and her first WTA title of the year.

Garcia was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, and won the 2007 U.S. Open at 20 years old to become the youngest ever to win a Grand Slam title. She was coached by her father, Robert Garcia, and his sister-in-law, Sandra, on the tour since age 18.

After her win at the French Open, Garcia said, “Of course it was a long journey. I won the title this year by a great start from Angelique. This title means everything for me.”

Garcia also won a title at the WTA Finals in Madrid two weeks ago. She did not play any of the other semi-final and final matches on day two.

Garcia also said she does not know the next year’s champion in singles.
